With two-thirds of the world’s poor residing in Asia and the Pacific region, Magical Light Foundation (MLF) is on a mission to develop long term, sustainable social development programmes for disadvantaged communities in Asia, ultimately empowering them to be economically independent and able to live with dignity.
MLF aims to achieve these objectives through the advancement of education, healthcare, community development, environmental conservation and humanitarian assistance. Focusing on South and Southeast Asia where there are large concentrations of natural disasters, armed conflicts, food insecurity and economic inequality in recent years, the Foundation has and will continue to work with communities in need to improve their livelihoods and uplift underprivileged Asians out of poverty.
WHEN IT ALL STARTED
Originally founded in Chiang Mai, it all started when Singaporean Ben Cheong, a former businessman and gemstone trader went on his first pilgrimage to Myanmar and witnessed students in a remote village wearing rags as school uniforms. He purchased and distributed new uniforms to the children and news of his generosity spread. Soon after, he was approached to contribute to school building and within the first three weeks of his official fundraising campaign, Ben managed to raise funds to build 3 schools.
One quote that remains embedded in Ben’s mind is by a monk who manages one of the three schools: ‘It is a big deal for the village to have a school. The village has waited 30 years for such an opportunity.’
Motivated by how a small gesture can change generations of lives, Ben now focuses his time on charity and awareness of the disadvantaged in South and Southeast Asia.
In an effort to serve the wider community of the region Magical Light Foundation’s headquarters now resides in Singapore with the intention to expand our portfolio to address the five sustainability goals within South and Southeast Asia.
